I used to be a sceptic of herbal remedies. Indeed I
was hostile to the idea of using herbs for anything. My transformation from a
hostile repudiator to an advocate of herbal remedies still amazes my wife till
today. For she wonders at me by asking, “Are you not the same person that was
so vehement in rejecting any suggestion of using a herbal remedy for our
children even when by conventional wisdom?” “I am not the same person”, I would
answer her quite seriously.
For I have matured through experiencing true
knowledge. My experience has proved to me that most of the people who reject
herbal remedies do so out of abject ignorance. And according to James Smithson,
“no ignorance is without a loss to man and no error without evil.” Hence
ignorance is indeed born out of conceit, presumption, vanity and indolence. It
is presumptuous of man to think that he can improve on nature and never nature
learning from man. We all need to know the truth that rests in creation. For
was it not reported in the scriptures: “and ye shall know the truth, and the
truth shall set you free”? If we dare to seek the truths of creation we will
certainly find why and how herbs are the most authentic medicines for all the
creatures of God on earth including us human beings.
I am able to tell you of the necessity of knowing
the truth because I was fortunate to come across the source of the true
knowledge of creation some thirty years ago. I started examining the work “in
the Light of Truth The Grail Message, by Abd-ru-shin precisely in march 1978.
Through the Grail Message I have had and I continue to have experienced and I
continue to experience the great goodness and mercy of the almighty in his
omnipotence, all wisdom, love and justice. Through the Grail Message that
statement of our Lord Jesus Christ has become a living experience for me.
The whole of creation is a work of love. The
greatest expression of this love, for us human beings on earth, is nature. And
the human being is a part of this love. Consider that what is described in the
scriptures as creation is actually mostly nature. We were lovingly placed in a
garden where we had it provided all that we needed for our sustenance and to
enable us fulfill the purpose of our sojourn in this part of creation. Our own
body is a part of nature by nature. All we need for a healthy living is
abundantly available in the plants and minerals of the earth. It remains for
the individual human being to gain recognition of the promise that the plants
and herbs around us hold for us. We are embedded in nature to learn from
nature. And so our greatest need is the thorough recognition of the natural
laws and obeying these laws for our well being. The use of herbs for food and
for medicine is therefore obedience to the laws of nature in gratitude to the All
Highest, The Almighty
My immediate interest in herbs was fired by the
writings of late Mrs. Elizabeth Kafaru. My remote interest lay in those
formative years of secondary school life. In the junior classes 1-2 at
government college Ughelli (GCU) in the 60s, nature study was a very important
subject in the curriculum. In nature study classes part of the activities was
what we called nature ramble when once every week the teacher took us to the
forest to ‘ramble’ and feel the pulse of nature. On such occasions we collected
specimens of the flora fauna to take to the class room to draw. Such specimens
included insects, balsam pear (momordica charantia), superb lily, (gloriosa superb),
sensitive plant/ touch-me-not (mimosa pudica), morning glory, terminalia catappa,
combretum, caesalpina pulcherima, etc. The botanical names of these plants
really made impression on our young minds. Many decades later when I started
reading about these same plants as being medicinal, memories of that time
flooded back. This further propelled my interest in medicinal herbs. Then the
illness (sickles cell anaemia) of a very dear daughter, my own battle with
hypertension and cardio-vascular diseases and my wife’s battle with fibroids.
With such background and experiences, it became a
matter of course for me to take responsibility for my own health empowered by a
deep appreciation of herbs and what they stand for in accordance with the will
of our almighty creator. Taking responsibility for one’s health but only when
coupled with health habits and lifestyle. Indeed a lifestyle of use of herbal
remedies immediately and naturally excludes excesses of any kind.
This book has arisen from my personal search for
knowledge of herbs and my experience of taking responsibility for my own health
by the use to herbs. So first and foremost I have written this book for myself
as a way of documenting my experience for my own reference. Not being a herbalist
myself the book is by one grateful user of herbal remedies which may encourage
others who may which to take responsibility for their own health through
self-help using the gift of herbs.
The inspiration to take it abroad come from my
encounter with Dick Quinn In his book left for dead. That book was a personal
testimony of Mr. Dick Quinn on the efficacy of natural herbs even for very
serious diseases. Mr. Dick Quinn was left to die by his specialist cardiologist
after two bypass herb surgery failed to cure his cardio-vascular diseases. It
was the simple herb cayenne pepper that eventually cured his cardio-vascular
diseases. So he felt like crowing about it in that book in order to encourage
others to use herbs with confidence. (See sections on cardio-vascular diseases
and cayenne). I feel like going to the roof top to crow about my own experience
of the efficacy of herbs. For it is necessary to chronicle personal experiences
in order to encourage others to take to the use of herbs with confidence. Herbs
represent the greatest freedom a human being should exercise concerning his
health and his joyful experiencing of life on earth.
To take responsibility for one’s health through the
use of green medicines is a demanding lifestyle which can only be sustained
through deep recognition and a heartfelt gratitude to the almighty for the gift
of herbs. Why worry yourself looking for herbs the preparation of which is so
tasking when it is so easy to obtain and swallow ready make tablets and
capsules. It is the lifestyle. Yes, the lifestyle is indeed interesting and exciting
for one gets to know so much and comes of appreciates nature in its faithful
service. Maria Treben the Austrian herbalist expressed the sentiment as
follows: “to find a way out of the hopelessness of ill health by one’s own
strength and free will is, thanks to nature’s medicinal herbs humanly elevating.
To win back one’s health, and to bear responsibility for oneself, elevates
human dignity to such a degree that the sick person is taken halfway to
recovery from the hopelessness of his sick life”.
The title of this book YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
I chose because of the way I experienced Mrs. Kafaru’s took immense help from
nature’s workshop. The message of that book is to the effect that one could and
should take responsibility for one’s won heath. I took in this message deeply
and it fired my interest in herbs. To know and use herbs for my own health
became a passion.
This book is therefore the result of that singular
passion. The book is an attempt to document my experience of the use of herbs
for my health and my search for knowledge on herbal remedies which I now wish
to call GREEN MEDICINES. The sub-title everyman’s guide to green medicines I
chose in order to point to a higher guidance of the use of herbal remedies.
Many authors of books on herbal remedies have been
inspired by their own search for help to cure serious ailments and the result
they got from the use of herbs fired them to become practitioners and to write
books so that others may benefit and have confidence in the use of herbs. Such author
includes great herbalists like Mariam Treben of Austria, Jethro Floss of the US
and our own Elizabeth Kafaru and a grateful user like Dick Quinn. It is a great
joy to be able to offer practical help to sufferers with simple remedies like
nature’s herbs. I have done this for neighbors and acquaintances and they got
relief by using herbs to solve serious health problems. I am myself a grateful
beneficiary materials and notes of a practical nature to guide the prospective
herb user.
Part two contains information on individual ailments
and herbs arranged in one alphabetical order; which I believe would facilitate
the use of the book. In addition a comprehensive index is provided at the end
of the book for the navigation and full exploitation of the content.
The book is basically addressed to the individual users
of green medicines. There is adequate information and photographs for the
identification of herbs and the preparation of wholesome green medicines and
their dosage. The book empowers the user of green medicines to choose the right
herbs for any particular ailment. Practitioners will also find the book useful
for recipes drawn from a variety of sources.
