For the individual who would like to take responsibility for
his health through the freedom offered by the use of herbs it is important that
he knows the various methods of preparing wholesome herbal remedies. There is
no need to re-invent the wheel here. I therefore take the liberty to paraphrase
from the well researched knowledge of notable practitioners.
“Liquid preparations which
could be water based, alcohol, wine or glycerine-based e.g
- An Aqueous Herbal Extract: this is prepared with fresh herbs that still retain their healing ingredients and the electro-magnetic “life force” intact. A handful of the freshly collected herb(s) is crushed with one tumblerful (240ml) of clean water. The extract is filtered and taken orally. One could prepare green remedies this way from herbs like fluted pumpkin (ugu), lettuce, amaranthus, bitter leaf, water leaf and from herbs like phyllanthus nuriri, tropical nettle weed, vervain, and sand paper leaf.
- Liquid Extract is a concentration obtained by evaporating moisture by heat to reduce volume by half or more, one may only do this if it is recommended for particular herbal formulas in this book.
- Infusion(This is prepared in form of tea). It could be hot or cold herbal infusion. Cold infusion is made by soaking 1-2 teaspoonful (about 3-6g) of the herbs in a teacup (100ml) of cold water for about 2-10 hours. It could be warmed slightly before the oral consumption. Delicate herbs like mistletoe, vervain, basil, etc are prepared in this manner. Hot infusion is prepared by infusing 1-2 teaspoon (3-6g) of any dried herb or mixture of dried herbs in teacup (100ml) of boiled water for about 5-10 minutes before filtering and drinking. Most herbs that are now available in teabags are prepared in the form of hot herbal infusion....................................................
