Another form of dysentery is amoebic dysentery (amoebiasis) caused by entamoeba hystolitica. Amoebic dysentery is less severe but it drags on and is often difficult to cure. The symptom is slow colicky pain and the stool is usually accompanied by mucus. Australian asthma plant (Euphorbia hirta) (irawo ile, Yoruba) is the herb of choice for amoebic dysentery. Use a decoction of the fresh leaves. Half-ripe tomato juice and ripe pawpaw juice are also good for amoebiasis. Herbal remedies abound for dysentery: such common herbs as young cashew leaves, cloves (Eugenia aromatica) (kanafuru, Yoruba); the bark of mango tree and mango leaves; Rauwolfia vomioria (asofeiyeje, Yoruba); asparagus racemosus; and phyllanthus muellerianus (egungun eja, Yoruba). A simple home remedy for dysentery is potash = rock salt (kaun, Yoruba) in warm water. Take two times a day and it will clear the dysentery. One teaspoon of the powder of young mango leaves mixed in a glass and taken for a few days is good for dysentery.
