Infertility, that is, inabilty of a woman to
conceive is rising in Nigeria and all over the world. Many factors in the
environment as well as bad habits and wrong diet are blamed for this rise in
fertility. Many cases of infertility arise from easily preventable causes. As
always prevention is better than cure. Spiritual integrity whereby one refuses
to yield to base instincts, keep a healthy life style, healthy diet which
includes raw vegetable and fruit juices, and drinking adequate amount of water
(at least six glasses daily) will help to prevent and remedy infertility.
Infertility affects both men and women. The lack of pregnancy may be due to the
woman or may be caused by the man. In men the cause may be congenital
malformation in the reproductive system of the growing foetus. The use of
plastic diapers for male babies has also been figured as a possible cause of
infertility later in adulthood. Heat which affects the scrotum such as caused
by working in hot environment, wearing tight underwear made of synthetic
material, or driving long distance may interfere with male fertility. This may
cause low sperm count. For low sperm count practitioners recommend the
following formula: blend 7 handful of diced fresh cola nut pods with 5 raw
eggs, 2 bottles of lime juice and 1 bottle each of water and honey. The dose is
1 shot twice daily for 3 months. Prepare fresh as needed. Another formula for
low sperm count is: prepare aloe vera paste from 1 whole aloe vera leaf,
immature coconut water, grated carrot, ginger, garlic, ripe plantain. Marsh all
together to form a thick paste. Then prepare corn pap with soya milk added. Mix
4 tablespoon of the paste with the pap and drink every morning. In women the
cause of infertility may be due to problems in the menstrual cycle such as
hormonal imbalance and non-release of ovum. Mistletoe is good for hormonal
imbalance. Infuse 1 teaspoon of mistletoe in 1 teacup of hot water. Take 1 cup
3 times daily. Infections such chronic STDs are also responsible for
infertility in men and women. In men the infections destroy the sperm cells and
affect the quality of semen. In women the infections block the fallopian tubes
and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Staphylococus bacteria is said to
be the cause of infertility in both men and women. So one of the first things
to do to solve the problem of infertilty is to avoid thse infections or clear
them if they are already in the body. Fortunately, there are many herbs that do
just that. For staphylococus, the following local herbs are effective. The
flower of calendula marigold. Infuse the fresh flower in boiling water and
drink one cup two times a day. A tea of the dried flower may also be taken, one
teaspoonful infused in a cup of boiling water, the roots, leaves and flowers of
ring worm plant (cassia alata) (asurum oyibo, Yoruba) boiling them and taking
one cup twice daily. Other herbs effective against staphylococus are xylopia
ethiopica (eru, Yoruba), root of male pawpaw, mango bark, bitter melon
(colocynthis vulgaris) (bara, Yoruba) and aloe vera. These herbs can be
combined. Other herbs for STDs include sida acuta (iasnkotu, Yoruba), and
Anthocleista djalonensis (shapo, Yoruba). For blocked fallopian tubes the
following herbs are useful: false unicorn tea, and phyllanthus amarus= Abrus
precatorious include Nauclea latifolia (egbesi, yoruba), fertility plant
(Newbouldia laevis) (ewe akoko,Yoruba), phyllanthus amarus (eyinbisowo,
Yoruba), balsam pear (Momordica charantia) (ejirin, Yoruba), root of female
pawpaw, cissus popunea (Ogbolo, Yoruba). If the problem is caused by bleeding
from womb, practitioners recommend a remedy consisting of peels of ten half
ripe mango ground or blended in 3 litre of water and mixed with 600 ml of
natural honey. The dose is 1 shot twice daily. If the problem is non-release of
ovum (female egg) the formula is scrape and dry the bark of root and stem of
fertility plant (Newbouldia laevis) (ewe akoko), grind it to powder. Add 1
teaspoon of it and half teaspoon of powdered ginger to 1 teacup of hot water.
Let it infuse for 10 minutes. The dose is 1 cup twice daily for 6 weeks. To
promote male fertility the following herbs are useful cissuspopunea, ponpola
(Bombaceae (Eku adan), roasted plantain, ground nut, soya beans (mixed with
pap), carrots, zinc (from seafoods), mahogany bark, guinea corn cob, roots and
leaves of henna (Lawsonia inermis) (laali, Yoruba), pigeon pea (cajanus cajan)
(otili, Yoruba). Eat food rich in zinc such as: egg yolk, brewer’s yeast, red
lettuce, fish, legumes, liver, meat, mushroom, oysters, snail, cabbage, poultry,
pumpkin seeds (elegede, Yoruba), water leaf, soya beans, sea foods, apples,
