MEANINGS OF 15 BASIC HEALTH TERMINOLOGIES

1. ALLERGY: is a reaction of body tissues to a substance
2. CALORIE: is a unit of heat or energy in food
3. HORMONE: is a secreted chemical substance in the body which is transported to other organs where it produces specific effect
4. PLACEBO: An inactive substance used in place of the active substance. Mostly used during control experiment
5. INFLAMMATION: tissue reaction to any kind of internal injury.
6. TOXICITY: poisonous effect produced when a person ingests excess amount of a substance which the body is unable to tolerate.
7. AVITAMINOSIS: is a condition that arise due to lack, in absorption or utilization of vitamins in diet.
8. CHOLESTEROL: is a fat-like, waxy substance found in all animal fats, bile, skin, blood and brain tissues. Excess cholesterol blocks the arteries thereby leading to cardiovascular disease.
9. INFECTION: is a condition resulting from the invasion of tissue by harmful bacteria or virus.
10. SYMPTOMS: anything that suggests or indicates the presence of diseases in the body.
11. OSTEOPOROSIS: is a degenerative disorder of the bone caused by lack of calcium intake, absorption or deposition. It is a reduction in the quantity of bone material
12. ATROPHY: is a wasting away of cell, tissue, organ or part of the body
13. COAGULATION: the process of clotting in the blood.
14. CHELATION: this is the means by which a mineral ion is captured and surrounded by a non mineral metallic substance, neutralizing the minerals molecular charge.
15. ANTIBODY: a substance produced in the body which fights against diseases and other alien materials in the blood stream.
