Botanical Name:Fagara Xanthoxyloidis
Yoruba Name: Orin Ata
This root herb is one of the most studied local
herbs. Professor Isaac-Sodeye and Abayomi Sofowora brought the herb into
international limelight. Their study of the anti-sickling properties of fagara
made waves in the 1970s. It became the subject of high profile international
seminars and conferences. The most famous use of fagara is in the treatment of sickle cell anaemia. A combination of
fagara, bitter kola and aloe vera in honey has been used successfully to
relieve sickle cell crisis. The preparation is also taken to prevent sickle
cell crisis. Fagara soaked in water or extracted in alcohol is used for
neuro-muscular arthrithis. Fagara root soaked in alcohol is said to be a good
remedy for viginal discharge. Drink two shots of the preparation daily. In all
cases the bark of the root is the medicinal part. The woody part may therefore
not be used. The fresh root is also more effective than the dry one. The root
has excellent dental uses. It is widely used as chewing stick, where it has
been found to prevent dental problems like gum problems, dental carries (tooth
decay) and for oral hygiene generally. The root is widely available in the
local herb markets.
