HAEMOPTYSIS

Haemoptysis in heart disease is particularly common in patients with mitral stenosis and in such cases may be due to pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary infarction or accompany attacks of acute pulmonary oedema. Pulmonary infarction associated with atrial fibrillation, peripheral venous thrombosis or local pulmonary arterial thrombosis is common in all forms of cardiac failure. In systemic hypertension haemoptysis may occur without a discoverable cause. Haemoptysis always calls for thorough investigation until either the cause is discovered or serious disease has been excluded as far as possible.
