Botanical name: Terminalia catappa
The bark of this common tree that that forms shades along roads and in compounds has astringent properties. It is effective in the treatment of dysentery. Adecoction from the bark is good for gonorrhea, leucorrhoea, bilious fever and stomach cramp. Sap from the young leaves made into an ointment is good for scables, leprosy and other skin diseases. The leaves relieves pain of rheumatism and the oily ointment of the leaves is good in breast pain. Leaves ground and mixed with palm oil is said to be good for tonsillitis. The dried leabes prepared as tea is good for sickle cell anaemia. The fruit is good for fibroid and the kernel is antibiotic and rich in oil with good fatty acids.
