BALSAM (Myroxylon pereirae)

Common Names: Balsam of Peru
Part used: Balsam, twigs, bark
Medicinal Properties: Tonic,  expectorant, exanthematous, herpatic.

Description and Uses: The balsam evergreen tree, which we use for Christmas tree and which develops big blisters on the outside of the bark, is filled with a very wonderful medicine called balsam fir. This liquid exudes from the bark of the tree after it has been injured. It is useful in all chronic mucous afflictions, catarrh, leucorrhea, as well as diarrhea and dysentery. It is useful externally in ulcers, wounds, ringworm, eczema, and other skin infections. The twig and the bark have wonderful medicinal properties that are good for rheumatism, kidney trouble, gleet, inflammation of the bladder, and urinary complaints.
