ERYSIPELAS

Erysipelas is an acute local haemolytic streptococcal infection of the skin. It occurs in both sexes and at all ages. The incubation period is about two to four days. The disease is notifiable. A quarantine period is not necessary.

Clinical Features
The onset is abrupt with local heat and pain in the infected region of the skin together with general systemic upset. There is a rapidly spreading red patch of inflamed skin with much underlying oedema of the subcutaneous tissues.
The edge of the patch is palpably raised and clearly defined. As the oedema subsides vesicles and bullae appear in the central part of the affected area. The face is involved in at least 80% of all cases of erysipelas as a result of the spread of streptococcal infection from the nose or throat.

Treatment
Erysipelas is usually brought under complete control within 48 hours of treatment with penicillin; hence the prognosis is now excellent for a disease which used to be very serious.
