A momentary loss of consciousness for which there
are many causes. Most faints are not serious and quickly pass. Their cause is
often emotional. Some people faint at the sight of blood, others in church or
on receiving bad news. These factors cause
a temporary upset in the nervous control of the circulation which
results in the faint. People vary in their make-up, and some go through life
without life without fainting, while others faint readily. It can be much
reduced by the device to wiggle the toes continuously – thus aiding blood
return from the legs to the heart. The person who faints should be kept flat.
Nothing more is required, and it is unwise to try to force fluids (brandy,
etc.) down the throat, as this may cause choking. For a feeling of faintness
sit and put the head between the knees as far down as possible until the
feeling passes.
