HERBAL TREATMENT FOR MEASLES

This is a childhood disease caused by a virus. Symptoms include high body temperature and characteristic skin eruptions. It is a serious disease which needs immediate attention. Herbs for measles include basil (efirin, Yoruba), vervain and wild lettuce (Latuca taraxacifolia) (efo yanrin, Yoruba). The wild lettuce leaves are pulped and mixed with palm oil and salt to rub on the skin. Palm kernel oil may also be rubbed on the skin to alleviate the skin eruption. The efinrin is squeezed in water and taken. The vervain is taken as tea. Dr. Aladdin’s 7 way is proprietary herbal mixture registered by NAFDAC that mothers find very useful in the treatment of measles. Another treatment recommended by practitioners is: boil some quantity of the leaves of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) (otili, Yoruba) and use the water to bathe every night and drink diluted lemon juice to help quench the thirst and bring down the temperature. Dust rice powder thickly on measles or any other inflammatory condition of the skin including burns and scalds. This has a cooling effect on the skin.
