Some find sucking boiled sweets or chewing gum helps during the early stages. After a week or two the urge dies away. It is then easy to do without tobacco provided one is firm. Unlike some addictions this one can be abandoned without special treatment because you CAN stop. Having a job where a No Smoking rule applies is useful, as is keeping as busy as possible. Observation indicates that the upper and middle income groups have largely dropped the habit but greater affluence among lower income people seems to have increased smoking among them. The wisest thing is never to start smoking or never to inhale.
If one must have something to soothe, limit smoking to social occasions, or make a rule “never smoke before afternoon tea” or “only in the evenings” or “only at parties”.
