Gangrene is a condition in which a part of the body
dies. It is usually due to interference with circulation and may result from a
blood clot in the vessel supplying the part. It can also be termed embolism.
Or it may be due to progressive narrowing of the
blood vessels which keep the part alive. This type of gangrene is not uncommon
in the aged, and usually attacks the toe which becomes blackened and shrivels.
Elderly people and diabetics should have regular chiropody as small cuts on the
feet can precipitate serious trouble.
