MALARIA

Malaria needs no introduction. It is endemic, it is a scourge, it is a killer. As much as possible preventive measures should be taken. Sleep under bed net preferably insecticide treated net. Avoid creating breeding places for the mosquito carriers. Drain or fill up stagnant ponds and dispose of containers in which water can gather, etc. Herbal treatment is now the most reliable option as malaria is now resistant to the usual anti-malaria pharmaceutical preparations. The symptoms are different from that of typhoid. One differentiating symptom is that in malaria the whole body including the extremities is very hot. In typhoid the extremities may be cold. Herbal treatment must be started in time and must continue well after symptoms have disappeared.
Herbal remedies include following: bark and leaves of neem (Azadirachta indica);  vervain (Verbena hastate/officinalis); Phyllanthus amarus (eyinbisowo, Yoruba), giant milk weed (bomubomu, Yoruba); lemon grass;   African cucumber (Momordica charantia)  (ejirin, Yoruba);  Peruvian bark=chinchona=brimstone  tree (Morinda lucida) (oruwo, Yoruba);  dragon blood tree (Harungana madagascariensis) (amuje, Yoruba); Guava leaves (Psidium guajava); mango leaves (Mangifera indica); phyllanthus muellerianus (egungun eja, Yoruba); henna  (Lawsonia inermis) (laali, Yoruba) stoolwood bark (Alstonia boneei) (ahun, Yoruba), siam  weed (Chromolaena odorata) (ewe awolowo, Yoruba);  ixora root; basil (Ocimum basilicum/gratisimum) (efirin, Yoruba), etc.                                                                                                                                  Traditionally, malaria remedy is prepared as a decoction (agbo, Yoruba) of any combination of the mentioned herbs.  The decoction is taken hot, one cup 3 times daily. Some of the herbs, such as guava leaves eyinbisowo, lemon grass, henna can also be prepared from dried leaves as tea. For more rapid action liquid extraction of the leaves is preferred. The liquid base may be water or malt drink.
