NETTLEWEED

Common name: Tropical nettleweed
Botanical Name: Fleurya aestuans= Laportea aestuans
Yoruba Name: Ewe fuafua
This is a common weed that grows in moist area along the road, as garden weed and in waste areas.
The leaves are deep green, soft and hairy on both surfaces. The hairy under side has mild sting. The leaves are the medicinal part. It is said to be as good as stinging nettle (Urtica dioca) and Tropical stinging nettle (Laportea ovalifolia = Fleurya ovilifolia) in its medicinal properties. Thus nettle wed is good for anaemia and it's a cleanser as it cleanses the lymphatic system and also a blood purifier. Nettleweed is diuretic and it is used with cornsilk as tea to reduce weight.
