A formula for example is to squeeze one handful of cotton
leaves (ewe owu, Yoruba) in maltina
brand of malt drink. This preparation is good for both malaria and typhoid.
Another formula discovered recently from an itinerant herb hawker is liquid
extraction of the fresh bark of mango tree. Gather quite a quantity of the
fresh bark. Scrape off the rough external part leaving the soft, brittle
non-woody bark. Pound finely in a mortar and extract in water and filter using
a cloth sieve. The rsult is an attractive milky juice, tangy and astringent.
Tastes good too. Add half a glass of lime juice to one litre of the preparation
and store in glass bottles. The extracted barks settles and so shake the bottle
before use. It keeps up for up to two weeks or more. To make preparation more
versatile, i crush the mango bark with tumeric
(red ginger) (ata ile pupa, Yoruba) garlic and ginger. The preparation is good
for malaria and typhoid. To make one litre of malaria remedy from neem, pour 1 liter of boiling
water over 5g of dried leaves (dried herbs parked tightly into 35 mm film
cannister is said to be equivalent to 5g of herbs); or over finely chopped 40
leaflets of fresh leaves. Take 1 litre of the tea during
the day. Practitioners
recommend the following malaria formulas: Squeeze 4 yellow pawpaw leaves and
30 leaves of bitter leaf plants in 8 bottles of water. Take 1 glass three times
daily. A handful each of hte following herbs: dried leaves of pawpaw, fresh
guava leaves, fresh yellow banana leaves, fresh mango leaves, fresh lemon
grass, leaves and stem bark of cashew and two handful of fresh leaves and stem
bark of neem (dongoyaro). Put all the ingredients in earthen pot or stainless
steel pot, cover with water and bring to boil. Boil for 5 minutes and leave to
cool a little. Store in flask and drink warm 1 cup thrice daily. One may also
cool the tea to room temperature, stored and put in the fridge. Or the
ingredients may be suitably dried indoors in airy environment. The dried herbs
are crushed together and taken as tea. Two teaspoon
in a cup and boiling water is poured over it and stepped for 5-10 minutes.
Strain and drink 4 times daily. Squeese some quantity of goat weed (Ageratum conyzoidis) (Imi esu, Yoruba)
in water. The more concentrated the better. Take 1 glass thrice daily. Boil an
equal amount of lemon glass, orange peel and brimstone tree leaves = chimchona
= Peruvian bark (Morinda lucida)
(Oruwo, Yoruba). Boil in earthen pot or stainless steel pot for about 40
minutes. Take 1 glass thrice daily. Mix lime juice with a tablespoon of raw
coffee powder or 2 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of lime juice. Take twice
daily. Pour 1 lite boiling water over 5g of dried leaves or 25g of fresh leaves
or sweet annie (sweet wormwood) (Artemisie
annua). Divide the tea into 4 equal parts and drink at 6- hourly iterval.
Honey may be added. Make it everyday for 4 days.
