MEDCINAL BENEFITS OF PASSION FLOWER

Botanical Name: Passiflora incarnate
Passion flower is a large family of many different species. The common edible fruit called water melon is a member of the passion flower family. The name passion flower is derived from the association of parts of the flower with the crucifixion of Christ. The wild passion flower has medicinal properties. The leaves are the part used. Wild passion flower is a climber that grows in moist areas especially places close to swampy area, where there is much vegetation. The leaves are hairy and deeply cleaved thus having three lobes. Passion flower’s best use is for sound sleep. It is also used in the treatment of tremor, asthma, and as an adjunct in the treatment of hypertension. It relieves pain generally and relieves tension in the nervous system. It induces deep sleep so that even if the sleep is for a few minutes one is much relaxed. The leaves are dried and taken as tea. It can be taken any time of the day. Avariety of passion flower passiflora edulis is used as a tintcture to treat sleeplessness, anxiety and cramps (spams). 100g of dried leaves is soaked in alcohol for 7 days. Take 3 drops 1-3 times daily. A decoction of a handful of the young leaves in 1 litre of water is said to be good for asthma. Drink 1 litre during the day.
