ASTHMA

Asthma is a condition of periodic and reversible constriction of the breathing tubes and results in wheezy and difficult breathing. It is often hereditary and due to abnormal sensitivity to substances in the environment.
Wheezy bronchitis in babies is not necessarily the same; it responds to treatment and many children grow out of it
Patients with asthma should investigate in an attempt to identify their particular sensitivities. The commonest substances causing asthma are house dust mite and animal fur. The patient may be greatly helped by avoiding the relevant animals; the bedroom, including bed and bed covers, should be vacuum cleaned daily and bedding should be of synthetic material. The bedroom should be sparsely furnished and clothes kept elsewhere. Mattresses are a major source of house dust and should be sealed in plastic bags. (The dust mite is a tiny “insect” invisible to the naked eye.)
Desensitization to house dust mite by the use of  a course of injection may reduce asthma attacks in some cases. Many medicines (tablets and inhalers to open up the breathing tubes, Intal and cortisone both as tablets and inhaler) are available to prevent and control attacks. When a severe attack does not improve rapidly on the usual prescribed medicine a doctor mut be called as more urgent treatment may be needed (injections, oxygen, etc.). Do not over-use your inhaler in a misguided attempt to avoid troubling your doctor. Failure to gain relief may mean that you need urgent medical reassessment.
Moderate exercise and special breathing exercises may help some patients. Asthma can, however, be made worse by exercise and some sufferers may need to use Intal inhalers before playing games, running, etc. Swimming is a particularly useful activity for asthmatics as it is less likely to provoke breathing constriction and can be used in a graduated training programme which your doctor may outline.
