INFECTION

This occurs when the body is invaded by germs. It may be local as in boil, or a generalized infection like measles. A disease is infectious when the germs can be spread indirectly from person to person. Thus “cold” are infectious, being spread by coughing and sneezing. Some diseases are spread by direct contact and these are contagious. An example is venereal disease in which the germs are normally spread only by sexual contact with a diseased person
