WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SMOKING

Smoking is a form of addiction depending on the sedative effect of nicotine on the brain and nervous system. There is no doubt that cigarette smoking is harmful and that it damages lungs, heart, arteries, eyes and digestive system. The lungs become coated with tar causing shortness of breath, bronchitis and worst of all, lung cancer. Smoking is also an important factor in the development of coronary heart disease and blockage of arteries in the legs. Peptic ulcers are common in smokers and severe defects of vision can occur.
Pipe smoking carries lower risk, although there is some danger of tongue and lip cancer. Cigars are less harmful and  where a cigarette smoker finds that he cannot (will not) break the habit completely, a change to one of these other forms may be useful. Using a low tar brand of cigarette is also worthwhile although not a substitute for giving up the habit.
