HEARTBURN
Heart
burn is
a feeling of burning behind the lower end of the sternum and is often
accompanied by regurgitation of fluid into the pharynx. The sensation strongly
suggests the burning effect of acid, but drinking decinormal hydrochloric acid
does not immediately produce heartburn in a normal oesophagus though it will do
so if the gullet is inflamed. The symptoms have been produced by stretching the
lower end of the oesophagus or by producing oesophageal spasm. Hence it seems
possible that heartburn is muscular sensation, It is common in pregnancy.
Heartburn may be experienced following meals, or following change of posture,
such as lying down or after heavy lifting. The heartburn following meals is
frequently associated with a duodenal ulcer, while that associated with a rise
of intra-abdominal pressure is due to incompetence of the oesophageogastric
sphincter, and is found most frequently in association with a hiatus hernia.
